Marie Hayes Obituary

Early Thursday morning, May 21, 2009, God in his infinite wisdom, called from labor to reward, our beloved, Mrs. Marie Tucker Hayes, formerly of Church Road, Va. After 108 wonderful years of life, she entered into eternal rest at the Battlefield Park Convalescent Center.

She was blessed to reside at her residence in Church Road, Va., until her golden age of 101 years old. She was born Nov. 14, 1900 in Ford Va., to the late Bose Tucker and the late Alice Jones Tucker. At an early age, she confessed Christ and became a member of the Mount Poole Baptist Church.

She possessed a genuine love for her home church and was a part of several ministries until her health began to fail.

Mother Hayes enjoyed entertaining family and friends, and simply enjoyed life and those around her. Her sense of humor and welcoming smile will be forever remembered by all who knew and loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Hayes Jr., two sons, Floyd Hayes and Leon Hayes,; two daughters, Eloise Palmer Gholson and Mildred Ritchie.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her children, Beamon Hayes (Clarissa) of Petersburg, and Bernice Hayes Johnson of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Rozelia Hayes of Baltimore, Md.; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, to include a devoted niece, Ida Royster of New York; loving cousins, and friends, one whom was like her daughter, Dorothy Bates, and a long-time friend, Belle Williams.

A homegoing celebration of 108 years of love and life for Mrs. Hayes will be held on Sunday May 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Poole Baptist Church, Ford, with the pastor, Rev. Stephen Pugh, officiating, and the Rev. Arlester Newsome Jr., eulogizing. Burial will commence at the church cemetery.

The family will assemble at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Beamon and Clarissa Hayes, 5010 Olgers Road, Petersburg, at 1 p.m. on the day of the service.

Public viewing will be held on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 451 Halifax St., Petersburg.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Home, 451 Halifax St., Petersburg, VA 804-733-1117.
