Mrs. Marie Ware Witsell was born in Edgefield County, S.C., to Elizabeth Morgan Ware and the late Tom Ware. Marie departed this life on Saturday, June 14, 2014.

After completing her high school education, she attended SUNY Old Westbury University, where she majored in sociology. In 2008, Marie retired from the New York School System after 22 years of service.

Upon moving to New York in the '60s, she attended the Community Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Archie Witsell. After her retirement, she relocated to Petersburg, Va., where she became a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

She was joined in holy matrimony to Nate Witsell on June 25, 1997. Marie was a very outgoing person and developed many friendship over the years.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted husband, Nate Witsell of South Prince George, Va.; seven sons, James C. Ware (Carol) of Pensacola, Fla., Vincent Ware of Queens, N.Y., Russell K. Powell of Baltimore, Richard Ware-Powell (Cleopartra) of High Point, N.C., Gerard Witsell of Frisco, Texas, Mark Witsell of Freeport, N.Y., and Chad Witsell of Bayside, N.Y.; one daughter, Lorraine Brown of Columbia, S.C.; mother, Elizabeth Ware of Clarks Hill, S.C.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas Ware (Geraldine) of Willington, S.C., Frank Ware of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Charlie Ware of Greenwood, S.C.; three sisters, Nellie Cooke of Augusta, Ga., Thelma Washington and Josie Howard (Raymond), both of Clarks Hill, S.C.; four brothers-in-law, Leroy Witsell of Charleston, S.C., the Rev. Archie Witsell (Josephine) of Jamaica, N..Y, Jacob Witsell of Queens, N.Y., and David Witsell of Jamaica, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Cain of Graniteville, S.C.; one devoted cousin, Louise Chestang of Springfield Gardens, N.Y.; and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service for Mrs. Marie Ware Witsell will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment will be held at Southlawn Memorial Park.

Wake service from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the funeral establishment.
