Mrs. Mary Lou Curtis, 92, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.

Born April 26, 1920 in Petersburg, Va., she was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia Smith Curtis and Alexander Curtis Sr.; her brothers, the Rev. Richard Curtis, Hodges Curtis Sr. and Alexander Curtis II; and her life partner, Edward "Pop" Bullock.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Mae Hobbs; a son, Nathaniel Jerome Evans; a host of beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, other relatives and devoted friends.

In earlier years she worked as a waitress at Fort Lee and a housekeeper at Virginia State College. She was along time resident of Sycamore Towers, but had most recently resided at Golden Living Center, Battlefield Park. Mary Lou was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va.

Mary Lou has left us with a legacy of love, strength and perseverance. She is fondly remembered as a woman with a big smile, a big heart, and a great sense of humor. She was a flirtatious charmer who was incredibly independent and fiercely protective of her family. She loved listening to gospel music, watching soap operas, making homemade rolls, fruit cocktail rice pudding, and settling down at night with her mug of Neapolitan ice cream.

A funeral service for Mrs. Mary Lou Curtis will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Alice Gray, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at the funeral establishment.

Family and friends are asked to assemble 10:30 a.m. at the funeral establishment the day of the services.
