Melvin James Obituary

Mr. Melvin James,Jr., 73, of 2405 Waverly St., Hopewell, departed this life on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. A native of Prince George County, he was born to the late Melvin Sr. and Easter James on Feb. 27, 1937.

Mr. James confessed Christ at an early age at Harrison Grove Baptist Church in Prince George.

In addition to his parents, Mr. James was preceded in death by his sisters, Katherine Bracey, Violet Steel and Lizzie Coleman.

He is survived by: six children, Melvin III (Felicia), Cheryl (Rick), Steven (Ann Marie), Sonja (Erik), Shanita and Christy; two brothers, Harold (Bessie), Berkley James; two sisters, Alice Banes and Pearl Williams of Bronx, N.Y.; one aunt, Laura Taylor; three generations of grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at the Chapel of Turner-Bland Funeral Home, Hopewell; the Rev. Dr. Steven L. James, associate minister of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Hinesville, Ga. The family will receive friends at the Chapel from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010. On the day of the service, the family is asked to assemble at the daughter's home, 1512 West Lane, Petersburg, at 10 a.m. The family may be contacted at 804-863-4893, 804-712-7052 and 804-334-7397.
