Melvin Allen Obituary

Mr. Melvin L. Allen, "Bady," 57, of 511 S. 18th Ave., Hopewell, departed this life peacefully surrounded by family and friends Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010.

He was a native of Prince George, son of the late John and Martha Allen. Melvin was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond, and a sister, Hazel L. Thomas. He was a former member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church and later accepted Christ at Abundant Life Christian Church, Spring Grove. Bady was employed with Atlantic Waste Dist. of Hampton for over 15 years until his health declined.

Melvin had several nicknames and was affectionately known as "Bady," "Big Al" and "Fats Domino." Everyone who knew him could not be in his presence without getting a laugh. One of his many sayings was, "If I tell you the huckle berry is ripe, you better get your bucket."

Melvin leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife of 18 years but married for eight years, Mrs. Mary M. Allen; his son, Montrice A. Allen of West Virginia; four stepsons, Ollie Riddick Jr., Carl Williams, Stephon Riddick, all of Petersbur,g and Dominique (DJ) Riddick of Hopewell; a daughter, his baby, Laquita Riddick of Hopewell; two brothers, John Allen Sr. (Shirley) of Hopewell and George Allen of Waverly; six sisters, Ruth Jones (Oscar) of Wakefield, Ruby Jones (Barbry) of Prince George, Hannah Evans of Disputanta, Anna Williams (Walter) of Prince George, Evelyn Taylor (Joseph) and Barbara Williams of Hopewell; a mother-in-law, Maggie Stewart (Charlie); a sister-in-law, Patricia Turner; five brothers-in-law, John Williams, Timothy Williams, Wilson Clary Jr. (Toni), Ronald Williams and Brevard Williams; a host of devoted nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

A service of love and remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the Chapel of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, with the Rev. Leon Pettaway, pastor of Abundant Life Church, Spring Grove, officiating. Mr. Allen may be viewed all day Wednesday at the chapel of Turner-Bland Funeral, Hopewell. Family and friends attending the service may assemble at William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home on the day of the service at 12:30 p.m.
