Myrtle Neal Obituary

Myrtle Catherine Neal, 96, of Hopewell, passed away peacefully into glory and the presence of her Lord and Savior at Brighter Living Assisted Living on Dec. 5, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin C. Neal, founder of Randolph Market Inc. and former mayor of Hopewell; and five sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Swindell; and sons; Marvin Jr. and wife Shelby, Tommy and wife Margaret; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and two nieces. Myrtle was born in North Carolina and moved with her family to Hopewell in 1921. Her father Joesphus Latham founded First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hopewell of which she was a charter member. She taught her first Sunday school class at the age of 14. She held many positions in the church during her life-time.

Myrtle worked with her husband in his business for many years, took care of her family and worked diligently for her church. Her life was given to God, her family and her church. A memorial service will be conducted at First Christian Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. The family will receive friends after the service in the social hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 203 N. 11th Ave., Hopewell VA. or Odyssey Health Care, 8000 Franklin Farms, Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23229.
