Nellie Maude Griffin Jessup, 89, of Colonial Heights, passed away on March 2, 2014.

Born in Elizabeth City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Henderson R. and Vennie Horton Griffin, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Jessup Jr. Mrs. Jessup was a longtime member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, and had also been active in the Colonial Heights Senior Citizens organization. She had worked as a secretary for the Southside Virginia Police Karate Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Ramsey; three sons, Carl, Kenneth and Paul Jessup; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 3510 Woodlawn St., Hopewell, VA 23860, with the Rev. Robin Lester officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Mrs. Jessup's memory. Condolences may be registered at
