Omar Ellis Obituary

Our hearts were saddened by the home going of our loved one, Omar Keith Ellis, of 25702 Surry Ave., West Petersburg, Va., on Jan. 11, 2010, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, Va. Omar was born March 21, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, to James and Eva P. Ellis. He was preceded in death by an older brother, James Wayne.

Omar expressed his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized at First Baptist Church of West Petersburg, Va. In his youth, Omar was a regular participant in the junior choir.

He completed his formal education and graduated from Dinwiddie County High School in 1973. After high school, Omar successfully completed Southside Virginia Community College where he became skilled at his trade. He was then immediately employed to apply that trade at Central State Hospital/Southside Virginia Training Center. He retired after 34 years of fine service as a carpenter's assistant and then a painter.

Omar enjoyed people in general, especially those living in his community. He was also an avid fisherman. With a pleasant disposition, he really liked to tease others when his favorite team (Dallas Cowboys) won and their team lost.

He is survived by two sons, Omar T. and Steven K. Beard; and a dear friend, Evangeline Beard of Petersburg; parents, James and the Rev. Eva Ellis; five siblings, George Ellis (Hattie) of Richmond, Va., Vernon Ellis of West Petersburg, Va., Jamie (George) Faulcon of Dewitt, Va., Deborah Ellis of Petersburg, Va., and Daisy Reid of Nappanee, Ind.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, among them a devoted friend Jesse Harper of Petersburg, Va.

He was just a fun-loving person and will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to make his acquaintance.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 12:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, West Petersburg, with the Rev. Peter Jeffrey officiating. Interment will be in Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The remains will rest at the church on Saturday from 11:15 a.m. until the hour of service.

Relatives and friends will assemble at the church at 12 noon for the service. A memory video may be viewed at the funeral home. Services under the direction of Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg. A.A. Tucker, funeral director.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Almighty Father, eternal God, hear our prayers for Your son Omar Ellis, whom You have called from this life to Yourself. Grant him light, happiness, and peace. Let him pass in safety through the gates of death, and live forever with all Your saints in the light You promised to Abraham and to all his descendants in faith. Guard him from all harm and on that great day of resurrection and reward raise him up with all Your saints. Pardon his sins and give him eternal life in Your kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
God of hope,
we come to you in shock and grief and confusion of heart.
Help us to find peace in the knowledge
of your loving mercy to all your children,
and give us light to guide us out of our darkness
into the assurance of your love,
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
