Mr. Oscar V. Jones Sr. (Pop), of 235 Locust Drive, Waverly, departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.
He was born May 30, 1911, to the late George Jones and Mary Maple Jones. This couple was blessed with 16 children, Bertha, Merman, Lilia, Zella, Norman, Ira, Lillie, Pearline, Bea, Madison, Edward, Hanson, Merceil, Dorothy, Gertrude and Oscar Jones. Oscar was educated in the Prince George County Schools and later became a farmer. In the year 1935 he married the late Hester Green. Mr. Jones attended Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Prince George.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Herbert Lee, Ronnie B. and Lewis; one daughter, Shirley Jones Crockett.
Pop leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted daughter, Margie (Jones) Claiborne; four sons, Deacon Charlie Moody (Virginia), Oscar Jones Jr. (Ruth), Eugene Jones (Jean) and Jerome Jones (Tonika); three sisters-in-law, Josephine, Laura and Charline Jones; 24 grandchildren, a devoted grandson, Cecil Jones of Waverly; 58 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, among them a devoted nephew, Eddie Gant; several cousins, among them a devoted cousin, John Maple Jr.; several devoted friends, William Hinton, Floyd and Emma Parker and Ralph Johnson; his caregiver during his final days, Tammy Taylor.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, Prince George, with the Rev. A. Carl Prince, pastor, officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Jones may be viewed at Peace-Bland Funeral Home, Waverly, from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church two hours prior to the service. Attending relatives and friends may assemble at the residence 12:45 p.m. for the service.
