Mr. Richard Wilson Jr., age 82, quietly departed this life at his residence, 2419 Wakefield St., on Friday, July 6, 2012, after a lengthy illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Richard was the third of seven children, born on May 11, 1930, to the union of the late Richard Wilson Sr. and Australia Holloman Wilson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James (Bone) and John (Daddy Boy); one sister, Virginia L. Williams (2011); one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Sue Wilson (2012); and a nephew, Willie C. "Boochie" Williams (2011).
Richard received his formal education from the Hopewell Public School System and he confessed his belief in Christ at an early age and joined Friendship Baptist Church. He remained an active member and drove the church van before his declining health over the highways and winding country roads for many, many years and enjoyed every minute of it. He was also a former member of the Sunlight Elks Lodge #1558 in Hopewell. Richard retired as a foreman from Hercules Inc. in Hopewell after 44 years of dedicated service. Before and after his retirement, he traveled extensively with his wife. He loved cars so much that he has a collection of various models on the shelf in his den. He was a quiet-spoken man but his heart and actions spoke volumes when it came to his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Dorothy Mae Tiller Wilson; two daughters, Mrs. Melva W. Lewis (Larry) of Hopewell and Jacquelin G. Harris of Disputanta; two sisters, Mrs. Adelle W. Ringer and Mrs. Maretha W. Bailey (Clarence Sr.) of Hopewell; one brother, Mr. Calvin Wilson of South Amboy, N.J.; his wife's brother, Willie "Bill" Tiller (Naomi) of Elizabeth, N.J.; two step-granddaughters, Christal and Dawn Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa.; two goddaughters, Shayla Williams of Emporia and Kayla Gregory of Hopewell; one grandson, Kenneth "Bodie" Harris of Hopewell and one devoted great-grandson from Disputanta affectionately known as "BJ"; one aunt, Mrs. Inez Faultz of Courtland, Va.; several beloved cousins, nephews, nieces and friends — among them, Mr. Sidney Tyler (barber) and Mr. Titus Williams; Virginia Hospice (Blue Team — Mrs. Joyce Lynch and Mrs. Shaniqua Donovan).
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, from Friendship Baptist Church in Hopewell and the Rev. Dr. Carl M. Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell. Immediate family only is asked to assemble at Mrs. Wilson's residence (2419 Wakefield St. at 11:45 a.m.). The family will also receive friends at this residence or call Mrs. Wilson at 804-458-8010.
