Mrs. Ruby Mae Weaver, 82, of 20207 Sheffield Place, Ettrick, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at her residence. She was born on May 4, 1930, to the late Charles Meredith and Lena Henderson Meredith.

Mrs. Weaver was a faithful member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church for many years until her health began to decline in 2011. Mrs. Weaver was a faithful and devoted member of the Missionary Society at Mount Olivet, The Relay for Life, The Virginia Birdies, The Chi Eta Phi Sorority, where she not only was a member of the chapter since 1952 as a student nurse, but was one of the founding and one of the oldest members. She was also a member of the Southside Democrat Women's and Associate's Club, Feeding of the Men's Shelter and the Azalea Garden Club, which she loved.

Mrs. Weaver was educated in the Cleveland, Tennessee public school system. She received a bachelor's degree from the Howard University Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Weaver retired from the McGuire VA Hospital after many years of service and was also employed at the Colonial Heights Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center for a few years.

Left to cherish her memories are her children: Joseph Weaver Jr. of Ettrick and Iris Robinson of Surry County, Va.; her grandchildren, Joseph Weaver III and Michael Samuel Weaver, both of Petersburg; sister, Florence Gordon of Atlanta, Ga., and a faithful and loving cousin, Audrey Lee of Teaneck, N.J., as well as a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews and other relatives. She is preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and her husband of 52 years, Joseph Weaver Sr.

Ruby, or "Mema" as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, was a caring and compassionate woman, who was a servant of God that when she saw a need, she tried her best to meet the need of those around her. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Ruby was an excellent cook and she delighted in watching people enjoying the dishes she cooked, with joy.

A celebration of life will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg. The pastor, Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. Viewing will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Downtown Churches United, 827 Commerce St., Petersburg, VA 23803.
