On Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, God extended his hand and called his faithful servant, Mr. Sidney S. Tatum of 1536 Youngs Road, Petersburg, at his residence.

Sidney was born April 28, 1921, in Petersburg, Blandford community, to the late Joseph and Lucinda Tatum.

He was predeceased by: his wife of 63 years, Alease B. Tatum; two brothers, John, George "Hay," and James Tatum; and three sisters, Annabelle Wright, Josephine Chapman and Laura Smith.

Sidney is survived by: his devoted children, Patricia A. Tatum of Petersburg, Pricilla T. Mercadel (La), and Donald Brackett (Lorraine) both of Virginia Beach, Alan Tatum (Tracy) of Portsmouth, and Robin Tatum (Kim) of Fredericksburg; a sister, Ethel Dance of Maryland; two brothers, Everett Tatum of Rhode Island, and William Tatum of Maryland; a sister-in-law, Helen Brooks of Maryland. Sidney is also survived by: seven grandchildren, Thane Brackett, Krista Barnes, Jennifer Sullivan, Adrienne Whitney, Christopher Mercadel Jr., Tyrone and Chavalia Tatum; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.

Sidney was a loyal and dedicated member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg, where he was a member of the male chorus. He was a decorated World War II veteran and he retired from Hercules in 1983 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Goodwill chorus, United Supreme Council, Ancient and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Southern Jurisdiction, Prince Hall Affiliation.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Bernadette W. Hite, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Crater Hospice, and At Home Care.

Services for Mr. Sidney S. Tatum will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Little Church Street Cemetery.
