Mrs. Susie Stewart Stinson, most recently of 214 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Golden Living Center-Battlefield Park, following a brief illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born in Skippers, Va., on Dec. 3, 1925, she was one of 10 children of the late Samuel and Mary Lundy Stewart. Mrs. Stinson spent most of her adult life in East Patchogue (Long Island), N.Y.
Mrs. Stinson was united in marriage to Mr. Tom Stinson on Nov. 4, 1946, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Their happiness was tragically cut short when an accident claimed Mr. Stinson's life only two weeks following their nuptials.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Stinson was preceded in death by six brothers, Sherman, Samuel, Walter, Eugene, Peter and Louis Stewart, and three sisters, Inetta Hicks, Barbara Jean Stewart and Mary Stewart Epps.
Mrs. Stinson attended John Armstrong High School in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. She devoted a successful career to the field of childcare while in Long Island.
Mrs. Stinson confessed Christ during her adolescent years; and was baptized at the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Skippers. There she worshipped with her family until she moved to New York with her sister Barbara. The two sisters were faithful members of Dove Holiness Church on Long Island. Upon the loss of her sister, Barbara in April 2007, Mrs. Stinson relocated to Petersburg with her sister Mary, whom she lost in May 2011. In Petersburg, Mrs. Stinson enjoyed worship and fellowship with other residents of the Lafayette House until her health declined.
Left to cherish her memory are several nieces and nephews, among them are two loving nephews whom she helped raise, Anthony Stewart (Celina) of Randallstown, Md., and Richard Stewart of Wyandance, N.Y.; a devoted niece, who took charge of her care, Ms. O'Shaughnessey Epps of Petersburg; and many cousins and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff, physicians, and volunteers of the Golden Living Center facility for all their care and support during the illness and passing of their loved one.
A graveside service of love for Mrs. Susie Stinson will be held noon Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 78 Garner Mill Road, Skippers, Va. Following services, Mrs. Stinson will be laid to rest with loved ones at the Jerusalem Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and offer words of remembrance from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at the funeral establishment.
