Mr. Sylvester "Wayne" Gilliam, 61, of 1700 Ferndale Ave., Petersburg, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg.

Mr. Gilliam was born July 7, 1952, and received his early education at Peabody High School, Petersburg. He was a faithful member to the end of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg. Wayne was a dedicated hard working employee of the city of Petersburg, until his declining health led him to retirement.

"Wayne" was preceded in death by his stepfather, Elwood Jackson.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a very dedicated and devoted wife, Jean Thigpen Gilliam; sons, Maurice Henderson (Heather), Lawrence Thigpen (Lafern), Rodney Thigpen (Arlene), and Anthony Thigpen; a very devoted daughter, Monique Thigpen; seven grandchildren, a special granddaughter, Danasia Granderson; two great-granddaughters; mother, Lucille Jackson; father, John Harper Sr.; sister, Jannis Harper; brother, John Harper Jr.; uncle, Henry Fisher (Beulah); three aunts, Gertrude Farrow of Norfolk, Mary Lawrence (Elmo) of Chesapeake, and Madeline Dodson of Hopewell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Samuel Robinson Sr. and Dorothy Robinson; two brothers-in-law, Samuel Robinson Jr. and William Robinson; devoted friends, Anthony Smith and Roderick Baskerville; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.

A funeral services for Mr. Sylvester "Wayne" Gilliam will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
