Theresa Van Dyke Phelps, 70, of Hopewell, and most recently McKenney, Va,. passed away Feb. 16, 2014, after a long illness.

Theresa was born March 4, 1943, to the late Buford Van Dyke and the late Lucille Van Dyk,e and was the wife of the late James Phelps Sr. Theresa earned her master's of education degree from Longwood University. She was a teacher and an administrator in Dinwiidie County, as well as the City of Richmond and retired after 33 years of service. Theresa loved children, especially teaching them to read. She enjoyed sports, music and cooking. She loved a good joke and loved to tell one. Her energy was great, her enthuisiam constant, her love for family and friends neverending!
Theresa is survived by three children: Sheri Batte Roberts and her husband, Kenney, of McKenney, Sandra Batte Hemler and her husband, Jamie, of Chesterfield, and John P. Batte IV of McKenney. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kevin Roberts and Jessica Thore; Lyndsey and Brett Hamilton; Zane Batte and Nautis Batte; and great-grandchildren. Alexis and Makenna Hamilton, and Layton Roberts.
A memorial service to celerbrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb 22, 2014, at First Christian Church in Hopewell, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Christian Church Madalon Lane Memorial Fund.
