Mrs. Vanessa Houston King, 59, of 116 Richland Road, Petersburg, departed this life Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

Vanessa was born on Oct. 9, 1953, to the late Mary Louise and Thomas Houston. She was baptized at Bethany Baptist Church at an early age.

A product of the Petersburg public school system, Vanessa graduated from Virginia State University, where she received a bachelor's degree in sociology. She was an employee of the United States Postal Service, where she worked for 13 years.

Vanessa leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Willie M. King; two children, Mycal King (Lashelle) of Illinois and Shannon King of Petersburg; two grandchildren, Teondre and Brayden King; a sister, Angeles Fowlkes of Maryland; two brothers, Lewis Houston (Richette) of Petersburg and Terry Houston (Deborah) of O'Fallon, Ill.; aunts, Hattie Reaves Bethune of Dinwiddie, Juanita Reaves of Hopewell and Ruth Houston of Atlanta, Ga.; uncles, Thomas H. Reaves Sr. (Eva) and Robert E. Reaves Sr. (Bernice) of Prince George; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends, among them devoted friends, Beverly Tucker and Richard Baliem, both of Petersburg.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Hopewell. The pastor, Rev. Joseph Morrison, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Sinai Community Cemetery, Prince George. The family is asked to assemble at 116 Richland Road at 10:45 a.m. on the day of the service.
