Verna Leona Grigg Smith, born Nov. 15, 1925, departed her earthly life for her Heavenly home on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013. She fought the good fight for two years after becoming seriously ill in the fall of 2011. She was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing. Her death has left a void in the lives of her children who loved her dearly. She will be missed beyond what words can express.

Verna grew up in Ford, Va., where she spent her adult life and raised her family. She completed her education in the Dinwiddie County school system and graduated from the Petersburg School of Cosmetology. In 1986, she retired after having worked 22 years at Southside Virginia Training Center.

She became a member of the Mt. Poole Baptist Church in Ford at an early age. Declining health and relocation to Sanford, Fla., to be with family prevented her from active membership in recent years.

Verna was predeceased in death by: sons, Oliver W. Johnson and Timothy M. Smith.

She will be missed and remembered by: sister, Fannie Mae Jones, Petersburg, Va.; three daughters, Saundra J. Gross (Gregory), Orlando, Fla., Karon S. Torrence (Rick), St. Augustine, Fla., Sharon L. Smith, Germantown, Md.; son, Jeffery S. Smith (JoLynn), Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Francine Johnson, Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren, Latasha J. Smith, Gregory J. Gross Jr., Samantha Katie Gross, Ashley Torrence Pitter, Evan Robert Smith; three great-grand-children, Kamari Johnson, Kameron Smith, Juliana Gross; nieces, Jacqueline Neverson, Yolander Lee; nephew, Edgar Jones; and a host of cousins; and other family relations including stepgrandchildren, Lateefah Torrence Braun, Rickey Torrence II, Reginald Torrence; and beloved friend, Beverly Simms.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the Mount Poole Baptist Church, Ford, Va., with the Pastor, the Rev. Stephen W. Pugh officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith remains may be viewed on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, from 12 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
