To the Howard and Wills families:
As a recipient of the educational enrichment work Dr. Vivian G. Howard spearheaded to the the Tri-Cities area of Petersburg during the 1980s, I was so saddened to hear of her passing. As a student in her International Children's University(ICU) and Mathematics and Science program at VSU, Dr. Vivian G. Howard reached out to a small segment of students and gave us an opportunity that to this day a credit for removing any anxiety from my capability to do algebra, trigonometry, computer programming and have a love for math and science disciplines. Under her tutelage, I was given a scholarship to go to U.S. Space Camp in Titusville, FL (Along with Ada Mbagwu and Ray Bolton). The funding and opportunity to do those types of activities in my elementary and middle school years would not have occurred if it was not for her vision and guidance to reach back into the communities of Petersburg, Matoaca, and Prince George to set up our generation for success. I am so remissed that I did not get a chance to tell her thank you again, as well as to let her know she is my inspiration as I work on in my doctoral program. I have been looking for her for about 4 weeks now just to let her know that she made a difference in my life by reaching back to children of modest means, and providing us with something the public school system's were unable to. Dr. Howard's model worked for me, and my peers and her family needs to know how wonderful it is that I can stand her at 32 years old and let you know that. I now have the challenge to reach back to the young people in my life to set them up for success for their futute. I know Dr. Howard's legacy is real and her stewardship and love for education has touch the globe beyond the tri-cities! THANK YOU Dr. HOWARD, and you will be missed!

I was sorry to hear about Dr. Howard passing. She was an inspiration to us all. I worked for her for about 15 months while she was the Assistant to the President at VSU. Over the years I would see her and get updated on all of the news of the family. The last time I saw her was at the Richmond Airport. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

My Sincere Sympathy on the loss of your loved one! Dr. Howard was one of the first individuals to greet me upon my arrival to Petersburg from Pittsburgh. She was a motivator and guiding force as I completed my masters degrees, as she was with many, many others. Her personality personified excellence and her beauty was obvious to all. She will be missed by many, but comforted beside our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Dr. Howard was a pioneer in many ways. Her late husband Roscoe was my father's first boss after my dad received his PhD and so I first met Vivian Howard in 1963. As a mathmatics professor, she was a role model to many. As a mother, she gave birth to 3 highly gifted and accomplished children. As a friend, and I knew her mostly as a dear one to my mother Janice, she was steady, loyal and wise. She lived a beautiful life and her spirit will truly live on.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Vivian Howard. I have known her nearly my entire life and she was truly an inspiration. Because of her example, I knew that black woman could aspire to and achieve the highest levels of excellence in academics and in our chosen professions. It was an honor and a blessing to have known her.

Dr. Howard was a mentor and role model to my mother Janice Barber and she worked with my father Dr. Nathaniel Boggs at Virginia State University. I was honored to have her at my wedding in 1992 in Eugene, Oregon. She will be missed, but I am glad to have known her, she was a remarkable woman.
