Wesley Calvin Smith Jr., crossed over to meet the Creator, Sunday, March 23, 2014, after a long battle with diabetes and kidney failure.

"Wesley," "Calvin," "Smitty," "My Mess," no matter what he was called by his friends and family, he was a gift to all who knew him. He was born in Richmond, Va., on May 20, 1955, and grew up in the Lakeside area. During his adult years he made his home in Hopewell, Va. Wesley was predeceased by his father and mother, Wesley Calvin Smith Sr. and Gloria Butler Smith. He was also predeceased by both his maternal and paternal grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Smith; his brother, Robert (Bob) Smith and all his children; son, Michael; daughter, Margaret (Aaron Willis); son, Jimmy; son, Bill; and daughter, Jessi. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hannah, Dillion, Jensyn and Madison.

Wesley earned his apprenticeship from Union Hall 1402 and became a millwright. He worked at building all the nuclear power plants in Virginia, as well as Phillip Morris and Nabisco erecting machinery. He worked the last 32 years with Allied Chemical/Honeywell in Hopewell. Wesley was active with the Boy Scouts when his sons were growing up. He also served on the Democratic National Committee and was a strong union supporter. He loved fishing, telling crazy jokes, spending time on the pow wow circuit and living life. Everyone who knew him either loved him or hated him, but he was never ignored. Wesley was a big man and left a big space in many lives.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a in his honor.
