William Myers Obituary

The concluding chapter in the book of life for William H. Myers Jr., affectionately known as "Billy," came to a silent and peaceful end on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington D.C.

William was born to Mrs. Ethel Young Myers and the late Dr. William H. Myers on Nov. 4, 1953, in Petersburg, Va. He spent his early childhood attending public school in Chesterfield and graduated from Matoaca High School, Chesterfield. He continued his education at Virginia State University.

William was the first African-American in the state of Virginia to receive the Young Teenager Award.

Upon his relocation to Washington, D.C., William served as a teacher in the public school system, a commissioner in the administration of Mayor Marion Berry, and a community organizer and servant. He had an especially deep love for "His Seniors" of the Carver Terrace Langston Dwelling.

William was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Washington, D.C., and served as an usher.

Surviving are: his beloved mother, Ethel Young Myers; his devoted brother, Charles E. Myers; his faithful sister, Deborah Myers; and his only niece, Lauren Myers; other relatives and several close friends locally and in the Washington area.

The family will receive friends in the Washington area from 10 to 11 Saturday morning, Nov. 20, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 15th and V streets N.W., Washington, D.C. A service of remembrance will began at 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held noon Monday from the Chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. The Rev. Andrew J.
