Willie Mae Brown, 79, of Petersburg, Va., went on to be with the Lord, Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.

She was born July 29, 1933, to the late Robert Jelks and Tensie Townsend in Bullock County, Ala. She gave her life to Christ at an early age at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in the Simsville Community, Union Springs, Ala., where she served as a faithful member. She moved to Ozark, Ala., where she was a member of Greater Sadis Missionary Baptist Church. There, she served on various committees, and was also a member of the choir. While living in Petersburg, she visited the Gravel Run Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, Va., until her declining health made it impossible for her to attend. She loved her family, and had a devoted love for her ex-husband, Fred Brown III of Enterprise, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Jelks, and mother, Tensie Townsend Tellis; stepfather, Denise Tellis of Alabama; sister, Mrs. Lillian Jelks of New York City, N.Y.
She leaves to treasure her memories, a loving and devoted son, Woodie "Bo" Brown; a loving daughter-in-law, Audrey Brown of Petersburg; four grandchildren, Woodie Jelks Brown II (Janice) of Dinwiddie, Tahsa Jenice Brown of Leesburg, Va., Michael John Brown (Carmen) of Sterling, Va., and Derek Jermaine Brown of Arlington, Va.; five great-grandchildren: Cierra Mone Jones, Woodie Dajon Brown, Kayla Ja'nay Brown of Dinwidde, Catalina Joy Brown and Michael John Brown Jr., of Sterling; four sisters, Jessie Hunter of California, Margaret Jelks of New York City, Betty Murray of Cleveland, Ohio, and Minnie Williams of Manhattan, N.Y.; nieces, Deborah Allen, Joy Owen, Phillis Surl, Marie Howard and Alyce Perrell; one nephew, Eric; cousins, Pastor William and Bishop Eva Givens; and a host of other special family and friends, to include devoted friends, Mrs. Lillie N. Jones, Mrs. Ercelle Jones-Ndiaye and Tyron and Teresa Harvey.

A celebration of life service will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Johnson's Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Petersburg, with the Rev. Maxine Winfield, officiating. Burial will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Petersburg. Public viewing will be held today from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel and at the church one hour prior to the service.
