Mr. John Thomas Roney, "Big Red and PaPa," 84, of Petersburg, Va.,, died Tuesdsay, Nov. 20, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital-Bon Secours in Richmond, Va.

He was the son of the late Samuel and Bernice Roney. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wif,e Evelyn V. Roney; siblings, Booker T. Roney, Lawrence Roney, Phillip Roney, Fenton Roney, Mary Lee Mason, Dorothy Jones and Mildred Pegram. He was educated in the Dinwiddie County Public School System, and was a retired employed as a construction worker at the Brown and Roof Construction Co.

He is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Roney Jones,Cynthia Jacquilla Roney and Novella Marie "Ree" Roney; four sons, Thomas DeLeon Roney (Elizabeth), Gerald Landus Roney Sr., (Joyce), Rodney Earl Roney (Betty) and Stanley "Kenney" Roney (Lois); six grandchildren, Tony A. Roney (Cynthia), Gerald L. Roney Jr. (Lorine), Adrienne Roney, Rodhem Roney, Felicia Roney and Brittany Roney; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marcellus Faulcon and Gloria Byrd; sisters-in-law, Gwen Roney, Vernell Roney, Nancy Roney and Rose Roney; one brother, Floyd "Bubba" Roney (Nancy); brothers-in-law, Jesse Blackwell, Dorsey Mason, Henry Pegram and Bobby Byrd; foster children, Lawrence Taylor, Tanya Walker and Shirley Henderson, and Carolyn Smith; devoted friends, Teddy Jones, the Coles, Walker, Simmons and Thorpe Family; caregivers, Thomasina Fisher and Calvin Young; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at the First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St., Petersburg, with the Rev. Kevin Northam officiating. Interment will follow at the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Dinwiddie. Public viewing will be held on Friday Nov. 23, 2012, at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 on Friday evening. In honor of "Big Red," the family request that relatives and friends will wear black with ascents of red for the homegoing service.
