Ms. Dorothy Shands Jackson (Dot), of Petersburg, Va., entered peacefully into eternal rest on Jan. 20, 2013, at Retreat Hospital, Richmond, Va.

She was born March 27, 1942, to the late John E. Shands Sr. and Carrie V. Shands. She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. She became a member of the Mt. Poole Baptist Church, Ford, Va., where she was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and Young Adult Fellowship Choir. In recent years, she joined in worship with Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va.
Dot was a graduate of the Peabody High School and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, where she received her bachelor of science in business education in 1968 and a master's degree in education in 1972. Dot had a successful and dedicated career in social work for the District of Columbia for many years. She was also a member of the United Order of Tents (Evans Glasper #601).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Shands Jr.; grandparents, Deacon Alfred and Mrs. Edmonia Vaughan; and several beloved aunts and uncles.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a brother, Stith L. Shands of Norfolk, Va.; niece, Wanda Henderson (Cecil) of Petersburg, Va.; nephew, Stith A. Shands; great-nephews, Brian White and Stith Kristopher Shands; aunts, Mattie V. Shands and Rosa Winfield; uncle, Deacon Earl Booker; many loving cousins, to include Louis A. Goodwyn, Machelle J. Vaughan, Deacon Gene Winfield (Odessa), and G. Diane White (Richard); goddaughter, Bernita Johns-Edwards; and a host of friends and family. Special recognition to devoted friend and caregiver, Tina Shell (Jarrell); her neighbors and friends at Claiborne Square Apartments, and the Tabernacle Baptist Church family.
A funeral service for Mrs. Dorothy Jackson will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., eulogist. Interment to follow at Mt. Poole Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family and friends will assemble 12:30 p.m. at the church the day of the services.
