George Urban, 85, of Dinwiddie, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013. He was born Dec. 21, 1927, to the late Joe and Mary Urban. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, and was a member of Matoaca Baptist Church.

Mr. Urban was an auto mechanic, and enjoyed metal detecting and playing golf. He was a master fiddle maker and player, a master carpenter and woodworker. He played bluegrass music for 65 years and twice placed first in the state bluegrass championship. He also played with Joe Martin and the Smokey Valley Boys. He loved the mountains, and collecting Civil War memorabilia.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Cridlin and husband, Alvin, of Matoaca; stepdaughter, June Mullen and husband, Gary, of Massachusetts; a grandson, Christopher Cridlin; a sister, Mary Ryan of Petersburg; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Kehoe and husband, Bill, of Chesterfield; numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, with the Rev. Donald Joyner officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.
