Mr. Roger Alton Skelton, 71, of 16919 Hamilton Arms Road, DeWitt, departed this life suddenly Tuesday evening, March 4, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 31, 1943, to the late George Skelton and Queen Allen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Diana Mason; a sister-in-law, Zella Mae Branch; and two brother-in-laws, Joseph and Edward Branch; and a stepson, Cedric "Hammer" Goodwyn.
He was a native of Dinwiddie County and a member of Mount Level Baptist Church. Through the years he worked at Crater Motors Co. (Petersburg), Fashion Inc. (Colonial Heights), Storey's Transplant Inc. (Colonial Heights) and Roper's Lumber Co. (Petersburg). Roger will be remembered for his hard work, good cooking and fishing. He will forever be missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, from putting them on or getting them off the school bus, attending their sporting events and fishing.
Roger leaves loving memories to his devoted companion of 45 years, Estelle "Cat" Goodwyn; daughter, Valencia Wynn (Marvin) of North Carolina; stepdaughter Yolanda Taylor (Gerald) of Stony Creek; and stepson, Kevin Goodwyn of Chesterfield; four sisters, Rozena Allen and Jaunita Manson of Petersburg, Shirley Thompson and Mary Walker of Dinwiddie; four brothers, John Hayes of Chesterfield, Albert Manson of New York, Eugene Manson of New York and Walter Manson of Hopewell; an aunt, Martha Allen Coleman; a niece, Fannie Graham; and a nephew, Sterling Warden; two sisters-in-law, Tressie Branch and Rosa Bonner (Lester) of Dinwiddie; two brothers-in-law, Stephen Bolling Sr. (Mamie) and David Bolling Sr. (Margaret); nine grandchilderen, Samira Parrish, Cierra Jefferson, Gerald Taylor, Alexis Taylor, Brandon Goodwyn, Brian Goodwyn, Kendall Clanton, Marquita Clanton and Shantita Clanton; eight great-grandchildren, Khalil Parrish, Damari Brown, Yasmin Clanton, Thomas Clanton, Shamiah Davis, Keyshawn Davis, two devoted Cassius Taylor and Kendaz Clanton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them his fishing buddies, Grover Hudson, Roger Noggin, Junior Tyler and the late John Jordan Sr. In addition, devoted friends, Mary Ann Turner, Julia Branch, Wayne Bonner, Ronnie Bonner and Willie "Fuzzy" Hudson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Mount Level Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the pastor, the Rev. Bernard Coleman, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the McKenney Chapel.
