Mr. Leander Matthews IV went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 9, 2014, after a brief illness. Leander was affectionately known among friends and family as "Lil Bro," and among co-workers as Matthews.

He was born to Leander Matthews Jr. and the late Cattie Bell Jackson Matthews, on Aug. 4, 1960. He was also predeceased by his brother, Carlton Lee Matthews.

Leander is survived by his father, Leander Matthews Jr. (Joyce Brown, long-time friend); siblings, Deborah Clark, Leander Matthews III (Patricia), Christa Matthews, Lorrie Carpenter and Lamont Matthews (Kari). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rebertha Pope-Matthews; aunt, Bertha Roach; nephews, Carlton Ellis (Kandace) and Dewey Carpenter; nieces, Shanté Shepherd, Addy, Leah, Taylor and Peyton Matthews, and a devoted long-time girlfriend, Karnette Lomax.

To say that Leander worked hard is an understatement. He was truly a gifted and dedicated man. He was wise, smart, reliable, conscientious, comical, spiritual, trustworthy and selfless. Leander was a proud graduate of Prince George High School Class of 1979. He was very close to his family and cherished the moments that he spent with his siblings in particular.

Leander worked at Brenco and Richfood, and was employed for more than 20 years as a taxi cab driver and dispatcher. Leander performed his duties with an intense sense of pride. Most recently he dispatched calls and transported customers in style while driving a spotless cab for Airport Taxi. Leander loved his job and worked seven days a week for several hours. He also had a love of animals, horse racing, race cars (once owning a stunning White TransAm and a Ford EXP), and he enjoyed squirrel and rabbit hunting.

He cherished his pet deer, Jimmy, and he fished and lifted weights in his spare time during his younger days. Leander was a sports fanatic, and enthusiastically watched the Miami Heat, Baltimore Ravens and the Chicago Cubs. He recently attended a basketball game between the Miami Heat and the Washington Wizards, which he had a joyous time.

"Lil Bro" will be missed more than words can express by his family, friends and fellow cab drivers.
