Joseph R. Deshaies Sr., 87, of Hopewell, passed away on Tuesday May 27, 2014. He is preceded in death by: his parents, Telesphore and Erene LaRiviere Deshaies; brothers, Roland, Robert, and Maurice Deshaies; sister, Jean Lauber; and sister-in-law, Pauline Deshaies.

Joseph served his country proudly in the U.S. Army Air Force. He graduated From Clarkson University with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and retired from Allied Chemical Corp. (Honeywell) after 32 years of service. Joseph worked at the Richmond Times-Dispatch for six plus years. He had a love for aviation and received his pilot's license before the age of 20. Joseph was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and was one of the oldest members of Father Massey Council #4568. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Bobbie Deshaies; son, Joseph R. Deshaies Jr.; sister, Yevett Peets and her husband, Vern; brother, James Deshaies and his wife, Pearl; a number of nieces; nephews; and other extended family; and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at St. James Catholic Church, 510 W. Poythress St., Hopewell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic Church; the Humane Society of Hopewell, 3412 Oaklawn Blvd., Hopewell, VA 23860; or Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Henrico, VA 23226.
