On Friday, May 30, 2014, Mrs. Ruth A. Mitchell entered into eternal rest at her home, 834 W. Wythe St., Petersburg, Va.

She was a lifelong resident of Petersburg, born on July 15, 1922. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Novella (Brown) Alston, and her grandmother, Ms. Eva Brown. Ruth had no siblings. She was married to her beloved husband, the late Deacon Emeritus Earl L. Mitchell, on Dec. 25, 1945. They enjoyed a blessed and happy union for over 61 years until his passing in 2007. They were a loving couple who opened their home to most of his seven siblings and many other close friends throughout the years.
Ruth gave her life to the Lord at a very young age. She rendered faithful and dedicated service to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, Va. She was an elder at her church prior to her illness, always willing to help. She served on countless church committees, programs and initiatives over the years, and was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship Breakfast. Ruth routinely attended Tabernacle Baptist Church with her husband, Deacon Mitchell, after her church services concluded.
Ruth was educated in the Petersburg Public Schools. She was employed for over 30 years at Bellwood Defense Supply Center. She was a skillful seamstress and worked part-time for Adolph's Clothing Store for many years before and after her retirement. She was the Past Matron of Electa Chapter 7 of Order of Eastern Star. Ruth enjoyed sewing, decorating, cooking, baking and entertaining. She was an avid card player, known as a master of the pinochle games. She held an active membership in the Nicolette's Pinochle Club and the Wednesday Afternoon Pinochle Club. Ruth will forever be remembered for her elegance, poise, grace and sense of impeccable style.
Left to cherish her memory is a devoted cousin, Mozelle T. Mason of Chesterfield; niece, Patricia Hines (Wayne) of Petersburg; three great-nephews, William Nunnally Jr. of Petersburg, Antonio Alli of Lynchburg and Mitchell Alli of North Carolina. Also left to cherish, Mrs. Gertrude "Gertie" Bailey shared a special friendship/kinship, and she was by her side until to the end; devoted friend, Mrs. Kitty Pegram; faithful caretarkers throughout the years, Mrs. Eva Murray, Ms. Marilyn "Nicey" Thompson, Mrs. Annie Green, Mrs. Catherine Lundy, Mrs. Olivia Moody and Mrs. Gertrude Bailey, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services for Mrs. Ruth Mitchell will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
Honorary and pallbearers are asked to assemble 10:30 a.m. at the church.
