Mrs. Mary Hamlett Woodard, of Golden Living Center-Battlefield Park, Petersburg, Va., formerly of Durham, N.C., died Saturday, July 5, 2014.

She was born in South Boston, Va., on Sept. 28, 1909, the second child of the late Silas S. and Mattie Jones Hamlett. With the other family members, she was an active member at C.M.E. Methodist Church. She was educated in the elementary schools of South Boston, high school in Kittrell College High School and Livingston College in Salisbury, N.C. She taught for many years in the Halifax County Public School System.

She was married to the late Henry M. Woodard of Durham, N.C., where she spent most of her married life. In Durham, she worked for many years at the Scarborough Day Care Center. She joined the St. Joseph's A.M.E. Church, and worked faithfully with the Stewardess Board #2 and the Ladies Aid Society.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one sister, Pauline Graves of Hinesville, Ga.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hamlet of Colonial Heights, Va.; devoted nieces and nephews, Valeria Sutton (William) of Hinesville, Ga., Wanda Harris (Milton) of White Plains, N.Y., Linda Holzapple (Todd) and Alexander Trotter (Pearl), both of Rochester, N.Y., Paul Trotter of Maryland, Dr. Gregory Hamlett (Dr. Brenda) of Prince Williams County, Va., and Jeffrey Hamlet (Kristina) of Henrico County, Va.; devoted helper, Ruth Mason; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Special thanks to the staff of Battlefield Convalescent Center and other groups and organizations that visited and gave her much joy and happiness.

Viewing for Mrs. Mary H. Woodard will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va. Her remains will be forwarded to the Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home Inc., Durham, N.C., for services on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at St. Joseph A.M.E. Zion Church in North Carolina.
