James Gilbert Brown, 74, of Matoaca, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014.

Born in Harrisonburg, Va., he was the son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Eunice Whetzel Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Baker, and a sister, Diane Pence. Mr. Brown was a graduate of James Madison University. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired school teacher for Chesterfield County Public Schools. In addition, he was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Petersburg and American Legion Post 136 in Ettrick.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Peggy Ann Brown; son, Gil Brown and wife, Kim, of Bergton, Va.; grandchildren, Jessica Brown and Justin Brown, both of Bergton, and Dylan Baker of Matoaca; brothers, Larry Brown and Richard Brown, both of Broadway, Va.; sister, Susan Brown of Bergton.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. A second memorial service will be held at a later date in Bergton, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 1769 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, VA 23805. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
