Mr. Sam Kenon Jr. departed this life on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Walnut Hill, Petersburg, Va. He was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Tallahassee, Fla., to Sam Kenon Sr. and Fannie Kenon.

Mr. Kenon was honorably discharged from the United States Army on Jan. 5, 1949, and he retired from Virginia State College (University).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Kenon; parents, Sam Kenon Sr. and Fannie Kenon; a daughter, Rosa Harris; granddaughter, Tonga Harris; siblings, Tom Kenon, Alonzo Kenon, Andre Kenon and Mary Jacobs, and sisters-in-law, Susie Harris (Roy) and Madeline Staples (Winston).

Mr. Kenon is survived by his devoted daughter, Velma Byrd; son, James "Consur" Coles; grandchildren, Tony Byrd, Nicole Byrd, Terrell Byrd, Carolyn Thurman (Reggie), Campbell Harris, James Harris (Sandy), Kenny Coles (devoted) and Marvin Coles; numerous great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Florence Thomas; son-in-law, Allie Harris (Joyce); nieces, Cheryl Neverson and Patricia Robinson; devoted friends, Gloria Parham, Kirby Williams, James Byrd and Joseph Chamberlain; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. Sam Kenon Jr. will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Jeffrey L. Reaves Sr., pastor of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
