Retired Sgt. Maj. Ralph J. Hanson, 71, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014. Born in Preston, Minn., he was the son of the late Ralph and Frances Shaw Hanson; and was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Hanson.

He was a retired United States Army veteran having served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Petersburg.

Mr. Hanson is survived by: his wife, Gudrun M. J. Hanson; a son, Thomas Hanson of Denmark; a daughter, Monica Hanson of Denmark; two grandchildren, Emma and Oliver Hanson of Denmark; three sisters, Carolyn Weber of Minnesota, Shirley Waldron of Iowa, and Betty Snitker of North Dakota.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 1769 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, with Pastor Paul Christian officiating. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, at a later date.
