Ms. Shirley A. Coleman, 71, of 2234 Richmond Ave., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. She was born on Jan. 5, 1943, in South Hill, Va., to the late John T. and Sally A. Coleman.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Gethsemane Baptist Church in South Hill, Va. After relocating to Petersburg, Va., she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member assisting with Vacation Bible School until her declining health.
She was a 1961 graduate of East End High School, South Hill, Va. She was also a graduate of the Licensed Practical Nursing School at Petersburg General Hospital, now Southside Regional Medical Center. She was employed as an LPN at Central State Hospital until she retired in 2009, after more than 44 years of service.
She enjoyed bowling, where she was a member of several leagues including: Central State Bowling League and Ladies Commercial League. She also enjoyed playing bingo with her many friends. She was an avid Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Lakers sports fan.
She was a loving and devoted sister, aunt and friend, loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna C. Jones; and two brothers, John T. Coleman Jr. and George L. Coleman.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a loving and devoted sister and caregiver, Linda C. Dixon of Petersburg, Va.; four brothers, James C. Coleman of Lompac, Calif., Willie L., Albert H., and Charles M. Coleman, all of Petersburg, Va. Although she had no biological children of her own she was like a second mother to her nieces and nephews, Terry L. Dixon Jr., LaToy D. Fields, Carlos Jones, Alton Jones and Charles Coleman Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Services for Ms. Shirley A. Coleman will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at the Coleman Family Cemetery, South Hill, Va.
The family will receive friends at 21203 Orange Hill Ave., Ettrick, Va.
