June 13, 1938 – August 15, 2014

God called one of His angels home on Aug. 15, 2014. Shirley Anita Harris departed this life at the Southside Regional Medical Center. She was born June 13, 1938, in Petersburg, Va., to the late Thomas Kelley Jr., and Dorothy Willis.

Shirley took a job at Poplar Springs Hospital where she then retired and worked for Carter Wallace for several years to retire a second time in 2002. She then became a foster grandparent with the city of Petersburg until her health began to decline.

Shirley liked to dance, listen to music and bring family together; her famous line was "I heard that". Shirley had a lot of courage, commitment and strength with a humble spirit. Shirley loved her family and friends dearly and loved her children (grandchildren/great-grandchildren) even more; she was the heart of the family and will be greatly missed.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Harris; son, James Harris Jr.; a stepfather, James Henry Willis; brother, Stanley Willis; and sisters, Vandelia Kelley and Monica Stokes.

Left to cherish her memories are six children, Stanley L. Davis Sr. (Pamela), Sharlene Davis, Marvin Harris, Rodney Harris, Gail Cunningham (Charles), Candelia Suiter (Keith); brothers and sisters, James Kelley, Daniel Kelley (Dorothy), Paul Willis, Dorothy Grant (Dan) and Pastor Angie Mason (James); and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-grandchildren; best friend, Roberta Bradley for 30-plus years.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22, at Third Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leroy Cherry, pastor, officiating. The interment will follow at the Blandford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. For more information or to leave a condolence, please visit our website at www.blandenterprisesinc.com
