Mr. Herbert Lee Johnson Sr., 83, of 1820 Birdsong Road, Petersburg, Va., was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Dinwiddie, Va. Herbert Lee was the oldest of six children born to the late Arthur Johnson and Laura Jones Johnson. After a period of declining health, Herbert Lee entered eternal rest and peace at his residence on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014. The angels of the Lord escorted him home to live in eternal happiness with his Heavenly Father.

He was an active member of Gravel Run Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, Va., until his declining health prevented his regular attendance. Herbert Lee honorably and faithfully served on the Usher's Missionary Circle and the Trustee's Board at Gravel Run Baptist Church.

Herbert Lee received his elementary and secondary school education from the Dinwiddie County Public School System. An entrepreneurial spirit developed early in Herbert Lee's life and because of his eagerness to learn and his sharp business knowledge, he became the owner of a profitable lumber contracting business and a neighborhood store for many years. Herbert Lee's business acumen allowed him to retire early in life, however, he still possessed a desire to work. So, he decided to protect and serve the campuses of Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University as a police officer. Herbert Lee retired honorably after 30 years of meritorious service on the police force.

Herbert Lee was the son of the late Arthur Johnson and Laura Jones Johnson Coles. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Parham and Catherine Walker; his two brothers, Roosevelt (Bubba) Johnson and Arthur (June) Johnson Jr.; and his son, Herbert Lee Johnson Jr.

Left behind to cherish his memories are his wife, Jane Johnson of Petersburg, Va.; his devoted children, Florine Johnson of Prince George, Va., Brenda L. Pullen (Harvey) of Silver Spring, Md., Lonnie T. Johnson (Mary) of Ettrick, Va., Gabriel Cytheorian of Prince George, Va., and Lyndon Johnson (Veronica) of Bristow, Va. Also cherishing his memories are his two sisters, Grace Harper and Ann Harper (Charles), both of Dinwiddie, Va.; one sister-in-law, Mary Johnson of Dinwiddie, Va.; one brother-in-law, Clarence Parham of Petersburg, Va. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, friends, devoted caregivers, Martha Tucker and Shirley Johnson, and his devoted dear friends of many years, Thelma Edwards and Dorothy Johnson.

Herbert Lee was loved and well respected by his family, friends, and colleagues. We will miss him very much, and remember him fondly for his humility, his sense of humor, his dedicated service to the community, and his love for life and his loved ones.

Services for Mr. Herbert L. Johnson Sr. will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Gravel Run Baptist Church, 12512 Duncan Road, Petersburg (North Dinwiddie), Va.; the Rev. Dr. Larry D. Brown Sr., pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive at 1820 Birdsong Road, Petersburg, Va.
