Mrs. Mary Ruth McKenzie Dickerson, a resident of Petersburg, Va., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at Colonial Heights Rehabilitation Center, Colonial Heights, Va. She was the daughter of the late Mamie Macon McKenzie and sister of the late Richard "Bro" McKenzie.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1920, in Petersburg, Va., and a graduate of Peabody Class of 1938. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg. She was employed in 1939 at Virginia State College (University) in the pre-school nursery program. She was also employed by Petersburg City Park and Recreation Department at the Harding Street Recreation Center, custodian at the Henry William Elementary School, Petersburg, and with the Girl Scouts of America as Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her devoted son, Simon Dickerson and devoted daughter-in-law, Myrna Dickerson of Boston; former daughter-in-law, Linda Cox of Toronto, Canada; grandchildren, Sakina Evans and Donnell Chapman of Petersburg, Va.; great-grandson, Miles Evans of Milton, Mass.; devoted nieces and nephews, JoeAnn McDuffie (Sheldon) of Marina, Calif., John Hill (Natalie) of Hopewell, Va., Shirley Buggs of Petersburg, Va., Walter Moore of Chesterfield, Va., Judy H. French of Largo, Md., Linda and Marilyn Hill of Petersburg, Va., Michael Hill of Chester, Va., and Chastine Barnett of Petersburg, Va.; a host of devoted relatives and friends, Daisy Hill, Otha "Delo" Walker, John Phillips, Leroy Ellis, Wilmar Parham, Beverly Goode, Bongo Bailey, Charles Davis, Bernard Buggs, Maurice Bryant, Joseph Armstrong, Carroll Crawford and Evone Stark; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A special thanks to Kim Winfield of Dinwiddie, Va., we can't thank you enough for your love, dedication and loyalty in providing excellent care to Mrs. Mary Ruth McKenzie Dickerson.

Services for Mrs. Mary Ruth McKenzie Dickerson will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Vernon Billy Lee, eulogist. Interment to follow at the Blandford Cemetery.
