Retired Staff Sgt. Charles H. Barnes Jr., affectionately known as "Charlie Barnes," 81, of 1121 Beasley St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life suddenly Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.

A native of LaPlata, Md., Charles retired from the U.S. Army on March 31, 1972. Staff Sgt. Barnes received many awards and decorations, one of the highest medals, the Purple Heart. He served in Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. He was employed by and retired from civil service at Fort Lee, Va.

Staff Sgt. Barnes was preceded in death by his son, Derric C. Barnes; sisters, Ann Willette Barnes Perkins and Adelaide Barnes; and a brother, Wallace Eugene Barnes.

Staff Sgt. Barnes leaves to mourn a loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Maggie L. Barnes; one daughter, Faith A. Barnes; a son, Steven T. Barnes; two grandchildren, Kewana Barnes and Tiffany Barnes; three great-grandchildren, Tyquan Barnes, Jaden Barnes and Ta'Ziya Gregory, all of Petersburg, Va.; one brother, Robert Barnes of Waldorf, Md.; four sisters-in-law, Mattie Smith (Leon) and Hattie Scott, both of Petersburg, Va., Lelia Barlow (James) of New York and Mable Wilkerson of Sutherland, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Herbert Wilkerson (Mary), Steve Wilkerson of Sutherland, Va., and James Wilkerson (Cecelia) of Mitchville, Md.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Special thanks to his caregiver, Tabitha Myrick, and devoted friend, Washington H. Scott Jr.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at the chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va. The interment to follow at the Blandford Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble 1:30 p.m. at the funeral establishment.

The family will assemble 1 p.m. the day of the service and will receive friends at 1121 Beasley St., Petersburg, Va., and may be contacted by calling (804) 732-2353.
