Mr. Walter S. Shands Jr. 84, of Stony Creek, Va., entered eternal rest and peace on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at his residence. He was born July 15, 1927, to the late Walter Shands Sr. and Mary Lee Shands. He was the third oldest of 10 children. At an early age he confessed Christ and became a member of St. John Baptist Church, Stony Creek, Va. Mr. Shands served faithfully as an usher for many years. He was honored as the oldest usher in 2010. He was also a member of the Big Brothers Ministry, as well as the Hospitality Ministry.

Mr. Shands retired from Dinwiddie Middle School and worked as an auto mechanic at Johnny's Automotive and Dave's Automotive for many years. He was also the owner and operator of W.S. Shands Trucking.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife of 56 years, Dorothy Shands of the home; one son, Roynal "HiPockets" Pegram Sr. (Betty) of Petersburg; five grandchildren, Gerald Hinton of Minnesota, Lavon Pegram Sr. (Tonya), Roynal Pegram Jr. (Lakisha), Lakesha Mason (Terry), and Tonya Pegram(Cornell), all of Petersburg, Va; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Nola Harvell of Maryland, Ruth Johnson and Shirley Shands of Stony Creek, Otelia Ellis (John) of Ettrick, and Louise Pegram (James) of Petersburg; four brothers, Otha Shands (Mildred), Ralph Shands (Viola), Samuel Shands (Carolyn), and Therman Shands (Loretta), all of Stony Creek; two goddaughters, Sheila Shands of Stony Creek, and Cordelia Shands of Hampton; a host of dedicated nieces and nephews, loving cousins and numerous friends; among devoted friends Garland Pegram, Glover Pegram and Charles "Skip" Mason.
The family would like to give special thanks to Southside Regional Medical Center staff, Dr. Matherlee, Dr. B. Kondruganta and Dr. S. Yellinedi; caregivers, Stephanie Hall, Shirlette Dye and Bernice Potts; Crater Community Hospice, and barber, Elder Sam Mason.
A celebration funeral service will be held at noon, Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at the St. John Baptist Church, Stony Creek, with the Rev. Herbert R. Holly II, eulogizing, and the Rev. Joan B. Freeman, officiating. Interment will follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. on the day of the service. Public viewing will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
