Elwood Ellis Spiers, 90, of Carson, Va., passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Catherine Spiers; daughter, Lynn Lastovica; and great-grandson, Logan Lastovica. Mr. Spiers served his country proudly as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served as a mortar gunner while in combat in the islands of the South Pacific and Japan. He retired from DuPont after 41 years as a lab technician.
He is survived by his sons, Donald E. Spiers and his wife, Peggy, of Columbia, Mo., and Steven F. Spiers and his wife, Dreama, of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren, Matthew Spiers and his wife, Amanda, Michelle Schmeissing and her husband, Scott, Walter J. Lastovica Jr. and his wife, Lauren, Katie Lemon and her husband, Luke, Julia Spiers and Meredith Spiers; great-granddaughter, Callie Spiers; sister, Margaret Guthrie; son-in-law, Walter Lastovica; and special friend, Lee Allen.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Chester Chapel of J.T Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Chester, VA 23831. A graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane Richmond, VA 23222.
