Mr. Herman Glenn Howell, 73, died at VCU/MCV Medical Center, Richmond, Va., on Saturday, March 23, 2013. He was born on Dec. 6, 1939, in Surry County, Va.

He served in the United States Army for 26 years and later retired in 1996 from the United States Reserves. Mr. Howell also retired as a chemical operator from Hercules in Hopewell, Va., in 1996.

He was a member of the Abram #10 Lodge of the Mason and a member of the Horseman Club for several years.

Mr. Howell was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served on the Male Usher Board and the James H. Threatt Club until his health declined. He enjoyed his life to the fullest and loved his family immensely.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Chapman Howell; father, Abraham Howell; four brothers, Abraham Howell Jr., Clandus Howell, James Howell and Melvin Howell.

Mr. Howell is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Cheatham Howell; two daughters, Kimberly Howell-Brooks of Matoaca, Va., and Pamela Howell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one son, Kevin Howell (Celeste) of Petersburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Thomas Hill of Surry, Va., Jean Washington (Will) of Hopewell, Va., and Alma Blizzard (Martin) of Surry, Va.; one brother, Paul Howell (Virene) of Surry, Va.; one aunt, Mary Conway of Connecticut; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service for Herman G. Howell will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at the funeral establishment.
