Finley Mahone Obituary

Mr. Finley Mahone III, peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at his home in Ettrick.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Solomon and Fannie Mae Cooley. Finley was the second child born to the late Anna Pearl (Cooley) Mahone and the late Finley Mahone Sr. on Aug. 2, 1950.

At a young age, Finley accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Shiloh Baptist Church, South Chesterfield. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1968 then enrolled in and completed Richmond Barber College.

Finley loved life and all that life had to offer. His passions were his family, building/home improvements, photography, barbering, hunting and the list goes on and on. He was truly a "jack of all trades." Finley worked for a number of years as a licensed barber on Fort Lee Army Post before beginning a 22-year career at Phillip Morris in Richmond. Through his life, he developed an extensive knowledge of the family's trade which he turned into a home improvement business by the name of 'Mahone & Company'.

Finley was a devoted father to his three daughters, Finequa Jabon Mahone (Cedric Allen Sr.), Yonzhel Fineyta Mahone-Bolling (Ralph Bolling III) and Finnel LaDreen Mahone.

Finley is also survived by: his four grandchildren, Myonna V. Mahone-Bolling, Michael A. Mahone, Zavian Mione Mahone-Bolling, and Cedric Eugene Allen Jr.; sisters, Pearl Anita Mahone Brown and Betty Mahone Hill (Calvin Hill Sr.); former wife, Yvonne Lavern Hicks Mahone; devoted friend, LaVerne Loretta Fields and devoted friend, Floreen Booner Danquan; two nephews, David Brown Jr., and Calvin Hill Jr.; six great nephews, David A. Brown, Dashjon J. Brown, Patrick D. Hill, Damian Hill, Calvin Hill III, and Kingston Hill; two great-nieces, Justice T. Brown, and Jaylen Busby; one aunt, Minnie Cooley Core; one uncle, Luther H. Cooley; two godsons, Larry Minter and Loran Minter; four adoptive children, Stacey, Michelle Turner (Marlon), Timothy Bonner and Arrick Bonner (Joy) and a host of adoptive grandchildren; cousins; close family members; and friends.

A service of love and remembrance for Mr. Finley Mahone III will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, June 7, 2013, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, pastor, and the Rev. Willard Felton, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at 21500 Court St., South Chesterfield.

Family members and friends are invited to pay final tribute to Mr. Mahone at www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, 804-732-8911, www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com.

Mr. Mahoney you crossed my mind yesterday. You were a wonderful man. Your life experiences gave you a knowledge and a generosity that shined in everything you did. I am holding figurine of a bear you gave me. It is as cherished by me as much as the memory of you.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
John 14:27-29

To Finley's beloved ladies:
Holding you all close in thought and in our prayers during these difficult times.

Finequa, Yonzhel & Finnel, I know all to well how much you ladies meant to your dad. His love for you was evident to all. Watching Finley raise 3 beautiful girls, I was able to see what a wonderful man and loving father he was, which is the main reasons I asked him to be Tre's Godfather. He was loved and will be missed by so many. Lean on those close to you and seek comfort in God!! Love you always Yvette, Tre'Von & De'Ja

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I will always cherish the talks Mr. Mahone and I had after a long day of teaching at Southside Elementary School. I would be waiting for my daughter to pick me up and we would talk about so many different things. We would discuss the news, weather, gardening, children and grandchildren, dogs, hobbies, just about anything at all. Since he has left and gone to be with the Lord my afternoons are quiet and I think of him and say a prayer. Everyone at Southside misses Mr. Mahone very much. He touched so many lives students, teachers, and staff. Thank you Mr. Mahone!

My deepest sympathy goes to Betty, Pearl, and all of Finley's children and grandchildren. When my Ettrick family and friends are hurting, so too, am I. My memories of Finley go back to the good old days when my sister Francene and I, and our cousins Sharon and Julie came to Ettrick for the entire summer and we would all have so much fun playing with Finley and Betty on Dupuy Rd at my cousin Michael Webster's house and in front of "The Store" which was run at that time my our Uncle Amos Webster. RIP, Finley...You have left a wonderful legacy behind!

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help at this time.

Betty Mahone/Hill

June 2, 2013

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family and friends of
Mr. Mahone who was affectionately called Mr. M. Everyday Mr. M would come into the office to bring special greetings and to ensure we were ok. We shared a "store" in our office in which he made sure there were always plenty of snacks and water available. Mr. M truly exemplified the love of GOD through his deeds and actions. I am so blessed to have met such a thoughtful and kind man. He not only impacted the staff but the students as well. As of Wednesday morning at SES in Dinwiddie County the void was felt and Mr. M was already being missed. Wishing his family GOD's peace during this time.
Blessings! E. Stewart

The end of the day at work will never be the same without Mahone coming in to share a smile and laugh. He was a very caring and generous man (just last week he gave me some money for my newborn daughter that will go into her college fund). I will greatly miss looking up and seeing him "play the violin" as he hears me complain about something....everytime I start to miss him at school I just think that he's probably standing right there shaking his head because we are all upset...he would not want that!

To the Mahone family, I have known Finley,Pearl, and,Betty all of my life.He has spent many days at my house growing up.playing as kids do and just hanging out with my Two brothers.when he got older,he moved right beside my mom.I know for a fact,he Loved His Girls grandchildren,Pearl and Betty. He would do anything for anybody at any time with a smile, never saw him angry but maybe once or twice during his younger days, and that was when one of the other kids would pick on his Baby Sister Betty. He always had her back.I myself still have my brothers and do not know what pearl and Betty are going through.but I can say Finley is now free,no pain just sunshine.and smileing now on his girls, grandchildren, and two sisters.and he still will have their back,RIP my friend. Will miss you.
