Mother Sarah F. Gregory, 88, formerly of Chester, departed this life on Monday, June 17, 2013, at River View on the Appomattox Health and Rehab Center, Hopewell.

She was born July 6, 1924, to the late Robert and Lillie Cornick whom preceded her in death. Also, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Deacon Ernest R. Gregory; four brothers; and two sisters.

She was baptized at an early age at St. Stephens C.O.G.I.C by the founder Elder Joseph Spence. She was a member of the Sunday school, usher board, home mission, sewing circle, prayer and Bible band, president of Women's Day and Young Woman's Christian Council.

She loved shopping with her sisters-in-laws and friends, yard sales and loved hats. Her hobby was sewing.

In 2001, she moved to Chester to live with her daughter and granddaughter. Later, she united with Wings of Faith Ministries, under the leadership of Dr. Antonio A. Tucker Sr., where she became the mother of the church.

She leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter, Thelma Askew Spencer (Gregory); adopted daughter, Ruth Hurdle; six grandchildren, Patricia A. McNeil (Sedrick) of Woodbridge, Phyllis F. Johnson of Virginia Beach, Rosette E. Askew Corprew of Virginia Beach, Grady B. Askew of St. Petersburg, Fla., Sarah M. Askew, Virginia Beach, and Valerie F. Wertz (Johnny) of Chester; nine great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, at St. Stephens C.O.G.I.C., Bishop Ted Thomas, officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. Family will assemble at 404 South Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach, at 10 a.m. Public viewing will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Beach Funeral Home, 4456 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach.
