Retired Army Staff Sgt. Earl Dewey Mason of Petersburg, Va,, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 1, 2013, at Southside Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born on Aug. 11, 1945, in Scotland County, N.C., Earl was the youngest son of the late Samuel and Katie Mason of Cumberland County, N.C. He was preceded in death by his son, Earl W. Mason; brother, Samuel Mason; and sister, Hattie Pritchard.

Earl graduated in 1964 from Anne Chestnut High School located in Fayetteville, N.C. He enlisted in the US Army in 1965. He served two tours in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star for heroic bravery in combat. He retired from the Army in 1980, after which he was employed at the Fort Lee Commissary. After retirement, he was self-employed as a lawn care provider. In his spare time, he was an avid Redskins fan and enjoyed watching sports and old western movies.

Left to cherish his memory: a devoted wife of 45 years, Thomasene Mason; devoted daughter, Teressa Mason-Pollard (Royal) of Petersburg; son, Toney Stubbs of Gastonia, N.C., and Curtis Davis, Tampa, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Kisha Mason of Surry; six grandchildren, Aaron Kinnebrew of Bloomington, Ill., Tenee and Sean Dilworth of Petersburg, Va., Kierra, Kianna and Kimyah Mason, all of Surry County, Va.; nieces, Cassandra Mason of Atlanta, Lassandra Mason of Fayettesville, N.C.; nephew, Lionel Pritchard of Marston, N.C.; a host of devoted cousins and friends to include Isaiah Manual, Charles Mack and Oscar King, all of North Carolina.

A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the chapel, Fort Lee, Va., with Chaplain Pete Martinez officiating and the Rev. Dr. Antonio A. Tucker Sr. eulogizing. Interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, Petersburg, Va.

Family and friends are asked to assemble at 10 a.m. at the residence.
