Alan Trueblood Obituary

TRUEBLOOD, ALAN STUBBS died at the Forest Farm Nursing Center in Middletown, Rhode Island, on November 10, 2012. He had resided on Willow Avenue in Little Compton, Rhode Island for many years. He was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania on May 3, 1917. His parents were Howard Moffat Trueblood and Louise Nyitray Trueblood. He was raised in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Alan survived his two brothers, Kenneth Trueblood and Howard Trueblood. Mr. Trueblood was a graduate of Harvard University, Class of 1938. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he was promptly awarded the prestigious Shelton Traveling Scholarship, which enabled him to take courses in Europe after the outbreak of World War II. He returned to Harvard as a teaching fellow in French and completed his Master of Arts Degree in 1941. During World War II, he joined the United States Navy and spent his two and a half year naval career largely in the Mediterranean. He completed his doctorate at Harvard in 1951. He served as a faculty member at Brown University for over 35 years in the departments of Hispanic Studies and Comparative Literature. He arrived at Brown University in 1947 and retired in 1985. He became an assistant professor in 1951, an associate professor in 1955 and a full professor a short time later. He chaired the Department of Comparative Literature for a number of years in the 1970s. He was an avid gardener and was a long term member of the choir at the United Congregational Church. He is survived by his cousins Eric Nyitray, of Southbury, Connecticut, Debra Coady of Arlington, Massachusetts and Emily Cousins of Hadley Woods, Barnet Herts England, and his sister-in-law, Jean Trueblood, of California. He is also survived by his faithful caregiver, Shirley Medeiros, of Little Compton. A gravesite service will be held at the Union Cemetery in Little Compton on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception at the United Congregational Church, located at 1 Commons, Little Compton, RI 02837. Donations may be made to the United Congregational Church in memory of Alan S. Trueblood.
