Carrera, Margherita - Providence
CARRERA, MARGHERITA I. Born in Providence November 5, 1932 to Emilio and Immacolata Lonardo. Margherita (Marguerite) was the youngest and last survivor of her family. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by siblings Carmella DeMarco, Dr. Lorenzo (Larry) Lonardo, Thomas Lonardo and Ralph Lonardo. Her father was the founder of Leo's on Federal Hill and her early years revolved around the business. Marguerite spoke lovingly of her memories of Leo's throughout her life. Marguerite worked as Dental Assistant to her brother Larry until she married Richard Carrera in 1955. At that time they became equal partners at Carrera's Imperial Market on Cranston Street. Three generations worked at the store and bonded closely with the community. Upon retiring from Carrera's Imperial Market Dick and Marguerite worked at Carcieri's Market and forged close relationships with that community and a lifelong friendship with Lana and Gerry. Marguerite took meticulous care of Dick through his illness and death. She emerged fiercely independent and feisty until her death on December 12, 2014. Marguerite is survived by her children William, Nina (Doug) and Ricardo. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren Christopher, Justin, Morgan and Carlyn. She is also survived by loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Herman for his endless support and friendship. And fondest gratitude to her relatives and friends who kept Marguerite chatting and laughing to the end. There was a Memorial Mass held with family and Florida friends at Saint Therese de Lisieux in Wellington. Burial in Rhode Island with Richard will be at a future date. Memorials may be made to Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, 399 Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence 02911. Marguerite would say "Ciao" but we add "Until we meet again".
