Redfern Jr., John Robert - N. Kingstown
REDFERN, JOHN ROBERT, JR. an amazing husband, father, uncle, grandfather, friend, and serial entrepreneur died on August 17th. John lived 71 glorious years. John ("Bear") was the eldest of two boys born to John Redfern Sr. and Rita Barlow of Needham, MA. He married his high school sweetie Carolyn Taglienti. They spent 50 fun filled years together before she passed in July of 2014. Bear had 4 cubs Christine Redfern Kass (RI), Jonathan "Joff" (CA), Sean (RI) and Matt Redfern (RI). Bear's cubs, in turn had 9 additional grandkid cubs. But Bear's pack was larger than just family. He was best friend to many. Armed with a math degree from Boston College, he started his career in 1965 as a software engineer for IBM working on the nascent mainframe at the dawn of the computer age. He grew to become a Regional VP and then left to follow a crazy dream of starting his own computer company. Bear was a serial entrepreneur and eventually started & grew 4 companies. His Grandpa Bill always told him to "do it while you are young". Bear followed this sage advice. As a family, we were constantly pulled into his adventures. When he sold his first company he bought a 52-foot sport fishing boat. We fished the Gulf Stream from the Bahamas to Nantucket during every school break. Like the main character in his favorite book "The Old Man and the Sea", he caught many prize winning fish including a 429 lbs. Swordfish, 1,007 lbs. Bluefin tuna, 117 lbs. White Marlin. Bear lived by a simple creed "Live, Love, Laugh". That was the family motto and he repeated it to us often. If that is truly the goal of life, Bear got an A+. Bear, we love you to the moon, the stars, and back. We will miss you. A viewing will be held from 4-7 p.m. this Friday 8/28 at Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on 8/29 at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church East Greenwich, RI. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
