PENDERGAST, DANIEL J., JR. age 81, of Channel View, Warwick, died on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Carol A. (Tatro) Edwards Pendergast. He was the husband of the late Shirley B. (Aucoin) Pendergast for 53 years. Born in Lewiston, Maine, a son of the late Daniel J. and Mildred E. (McNulla) Pendergast, he lived in Warwick for 70 years. He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Business Administration. Dan was employed at Merrill Lynch & Co. in Providence for 38 years, retiring as a vice president and senior financial consultant in 1997. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War era, he served with the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1957 as a 1st Lieutenant, Navigator. In 1957 he joined the Rhode Island Air National Guard, and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel, retiring as a Master Navigator in 1979. From 1979-1982 he served as a Lt. Colonel with the USAF Reserve, as a Liaison Officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy in its recruitment and counseling of academy candidates. A proud alumnus of URI, Dan's loyalty and devotion to the university were well known. At the URI Foundation, he served as a trustee, treasurer, member of the executive board, and chair of the finance and investment committees. At the URI Alumni Association, he was a former vice president and executive board member, and chaired several committees, including the 1994-1995 Annual Fund Drive. In 1995, he was awarded the "Ram Award" by the Alumni Association, its highest tribute to an alumnus. Active in numerous community groups, Dan was a member of the Rotary Club of Warwick, and served on its board of directors. He was the club's 1998 Rotarian of the Year, and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as chairman of the board at Cornerstone Adult Services, and was a member of the board of St. Elizabeth Community. At Kent House, he served on the board of directors and finance committee. A founding member of St. Kevin Church, he served on the parish investment committee. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Daniel J. Pendergast, III and his wife Kimberly of Arnold, MD; a daughter, Kara A. Moore and her husband Gary of Littleton, CO; six grandchildren, Madeline R. Pendergast, Hannah J. Pendergast, Danielle M. Pendergast, Blake A. Moore, Jack B. Moore, and Danny J. Moore; a brother, Brian D. Pendergast of Warwick, and a sister, Mary M. Pendergast of Greenville. He was the brother of the late James F. Pendergast, Michael M. Pendergast, and Peter D. Pendergast. He is also survived by his wife Carol's daughter and sons, Susan G. Ferreira of Robbinston, ME, Richard D. Edwards, Jr. of Westerly, and Robert B. Edwards of Warwick. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 6, at 8:45 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 3-7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. So saddened to learn today of Dan's passing. He was a huge influence in my coming to the URI Foundation and his unconditional love of the University set a high standard. I will always recall how he conducted himself with class and dignity, only with the best interests of URI in mind.
