Byron Steger

STEGER, BYRON C. 84, of Chepachet and Wakefield passed away Monday, December 23, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis (Chase) Steger, to whom we was married for 61 years. He was born in Dallas, TX, the youngest son of the late Phillip P. and Dorothy (Blount) Steger. Byron retired from the former New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. (now Verizon) after 35 years of service as a Mechanic, Telephone Lineman and Contract Work Inspector. He was a member of the Chepachet Union Church, Friendship Lodge # 7 F&AM of Chepachet where he also served as a Past Master. He was past Grand Master of Ceremonies for the Masonic Grand Lodge of R.I., a member of The Palestine Shrine, The Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and a member and volunteer for the Telephone Pioneers, Northern RI's Meals on Wheels, and for many years served on the Chepachet Volunteer Fire Department. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter Linda Steger Olbrys and her husband Jim of Manchester, CT; his granddaughters Lindsey Olbrys and fiancé Brent Cook of Weyer's Cave, Virginia; and Megan Olbrys and husband Jose Mogollon of Branford, CT. He was the brother of the late Phillip C. Steger and Dorothy M. Stevenson. Byron served in the Merchant Marines during WWII where he learned to love the sea, sing sea chanteys, tie knots, play the ukulele and work with wood. His passion for wooden boats and Point Judith Pond was surpassed only by his love for Phyllis and Linda. Visitation is Friday, December 27, 2013 from 3-7pm in the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (RT. 44) Greenville. Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service, Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00am in Chepachet Union Church, 1138 Putnam Pike, Chepachet. Burial will be for relatives only.
