Professsor Sapinsley ingnited my interest in economics. Enjoyed his classes very much and I am sure he will be missed by many students, friends and family. He was a great guy and very helpful to me as I went through RIC.

Dear Mrs. Sapinsley,
I was so saddened to learn of your husband's passing. It was such a pleasure knowing him all those years at Laurelmead.
I always admired Mr. Sapinsley's intelligence, quick wit and quiet confidence as he chaired the Budget Committee and served in so many other leadership roles in the community.
It wasn't until after I read your autobiography that I really got a glimpse of the softer side - the loving husband and father he was. That was a real treat, but certainly no surprise.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Patty Olen

Dear Lila, I remember John driving the campaign car up and down and around and about RI with a box of balloons and a helium tank in the back. He was so enthusiastic and kept all our spirits energized. I was very very lucky to know him and you. Best wishes, Suzanne Williams

John was a driving force in the Providence Citizen's lobby, a group working for a better Providence in the late '70s. He was an inspiration to all of us who worked with him then. He and Lila have been good friends to and fearsome bridge opponents to my Mom Sis Barnes at Laurelmead. John, we will miss you.

Beyond life's window panes
John Sapinsley Milton's Shadow
Henceforth
Linger's over Providence's brightest horizon
Timeless hearts of life
Never quite does such an essence leave;
Not the shore's of New England
Nor
In winter's bitter season
Does such a man fade away?
Nay !
Spring's rebirth will ne're replace his spunk for life;
Nor cloud his feisty eyed missions for beauty
Never does death erase a warming embrace
Nor silence that hand that reached out to others'
The formal side
Maybe;
A passionate stance
Always;
A Lingering glimmer
In other's stories
In other's hearts .
For it is in what we leave behind-
Our
Actions;
Drives
Desires
All
Constant and enduring sparks
An Eternal flame of hope
Such moments ignite a man's life..
A man's legacy and home.
His hope for Providence
For humanity is etched into all of us
For long after the soul of Mr. Sapinsley Milton
Fell to slumber
He graced our lives with charity.
The fondest of memories always
The Hamlin family somberly sends their utmost condolence
A powerful force
Once graced

John Sapinsley cared deeply about reform. He and Lila worked over the decades for ethics and open government reforms. Their leadership proved crucial in bringing separation of powers to Rhode Island. Warm blessings for Lila and all who mourn John's passing.

My love and sympathy to Lila, Jill, Carol, Joan and Pat, from one who spent many hours at 25 Cooke Street during our teen years - and even with you in Paris 1967! My most recent memory is of John and Lila's visit with me and being fondly greeted by John as his ' fifth daughter'. All my love from across the miles, and with a heart full of love and admiration. John was a tremendous asset to Rhode Island. Aside from his obvious great work in business and education, he was a big supporter of helping young people understand how the economy works and how to manage their money. John and Lila were a great team. We will miss him. My best to Lila and the Sapinsley family.
