Paul Warburton Obituary

WARBURTON, PAUL R. 58, of Wakefield, RI died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011. Paul was born on March 11, 1953 in Providence, RI and was the loving son of Ralph A. Warburton and the late Rosemary (Humer) Warburton. Paul grew up in East Greenwich, RI, and graduated from Moses Brown in 1971 where he was captain of the hockey team, member of the baseball team and on the school paper. Paul then attended Dartmouth College and graduated from Providence College in 2006 majoring in history and playing hockey for both schools. In 2010, Paul accomplished a lifelong dream by publishing a book on his beloved sport of baseball entitled "Signature Seasons Fifteen Baseball Legends at Their Most Memorable 1908-1949". Paul worked for Metropolitan Life Home & Auto for the last 23 years in the claims department and previously was a sports writer for several local papers throughout the state. Warby, as he was known to his friends and fellow hockey players, enjoyed tennis, ping pong, traveling and swimming at the beach. Besides his father and best friend, Paul is also survived by his sister, Martha W. Brough and her husband John Brough of Wakefield, RI; his niece, Jacquelyn Brough of San Francisco, CA; nephew, Kyle Brough of Wakefield, RI and numerous cousins. The family will receive friends at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879, or a charity of their choice in Paul's memory. Dear Ralph and Martha,

No words of mine can mean much now. Your loss is far too great and much too close. But for our Dominican community here at Providence College, for our alumni and alumnae, and in my own name, we want to make known our deepest sympathy. In the praying we are doing, Paul is with us. So are you!

At a time such as this nothing anyone says makes much sense. (Perhaps better than most, I know that.) But it is my hope, that the consoling thought of a gifted Trappist monk might help.

Thomas Merton wrote, death is where the hills end, and the stars begin.

Warbys'"hills" are over now! It's his time to be with the "stars" and their Source. It is my hope and I pray, that the deep, inner Peace that thought can induce, will be with you and your family...especially now.

May Mary, the temple in whom God's Son became a priest, keep you near, in her care.

With His Love and mine,

Cindy McDermott

I was very saddened to hear of Paul's passing. A friend since high school, Paul was kind, bright, and a talented writer. I was glad he was able to fulfill his dream of writing a book about baseball, which I'm proud to own. Paul was simply a good, sincere, thoughtful person, and I miss him.

Mr. Warburton & family -- I came to know Paul as a fellow 7th-grader at Eldredge School in East Greenwich back in '65, and we kept in tough, off and on, for more than 40 years. Last year, we touched base again after I learned he had written "Signature Seasons -- Fifteen Baseball Legends at Their Most Memorable, 1908-1949." It was a great book, and Paul was a good writer and a better guy. My condolences to his father and family. Godspeed, Paul.
